Starting a Tent Rental Business From Home

Tents are a natural add-on for a home-based rental business: almost every backyard party, graduation, and church picnic needs shade or rain cover. They are also bulky, heavy, and regulated, so it pays to learn the basics before you buy your first one.

Pop-ups, frame tents, and pole tents

  • Pop-up canopies (commonly 10×10 or 10×20 feet) are the easiest starting point. As of October 2026, 10×10 models labeled “commercial” on Walmart.com ran roughly $110 to $245.
  • Pole tents rely on center poles and must be staked, so they generally can’t go up on concrete, according to fabric maker Herculite. A 20×20 TentandTable pole tent was listed at about $1,600 as of October 2026.
  • Frame tents are freestanding with no center poles and can sit on grass, pavement, or decks (Herculite). They cost more: a TentandTable set of three 20×20 frame tents was listed at about $9,000 as of October 2026.

Permits and flame-retardant fabric

Many fire departments follow the International Fire Code. Fairburn, Georgia, for example, requires a permit for tents larger than 400 square feet, while Gilbert, Arizona, exempts tents under 700 square feet that are open on all sides. Rules vary, so call the local fire marshal for every event.

Buy fabric that meets NFPA 701 and carries a permanent label. The Peoria, Illinois, fire department asks for a lab certificate and says missing or mismatched labels can lead to a citation. If a tent carries a different label, such as CPAI-84, ask your local inspector whether it will be accepted.

Staking, weights, and wind

Before driving a single stake, contact 811 at least two to three business days ahead so utilities can mark buried lines. This is guidance from 811 Before You Dig, a Common Ground Alliance initiative.

On pavement, use ballast. Sedona Fire District’s guidance for event canopies calls for at least one weight of about 25 pounds per leg and taking canopies down when winds exceed 15 mph. Always follow your tent manufacturer’s anchoring instructions too.

Crew safety

Ballast for big tents can be massive; one Ohio rental company lists concrete blocks of about 200 to 350+ pounds. Plan on at least two people for anything beyond a pop-up, and use carts or equipment for heavy loads. On ladders, OSHA advises keeping three points of contact, using only stable, level ground, and staying off the top step.

Cleaning, drying, and storage

Herculite recommends mild soap and a soft brush, never detergent or bleach. Dry every tent completely, including straps, ropes, and poles, before you pack it up. Mildew spreads fast on damp fabric, so set aside garage space where wet tops can air out.

Insurance, pricing, and booking

The Hartford lists general liability, inland marine (for equipment), commercial auto, and workers’ compensation among the coverages for party rental businesses. Talk to an agent about your setup.

To get a feel for pricing, study local competitors. Columbus Parties in Ohio, for example, listed a 20×30 frame tent at $399 per day, with delivery, setup, and concrete ballast charged separately. Build permit lead time, 811 calls, and weather plans into your booking calendar from day one.
