Etsy Star Seller: What It Takes and How a Garage Shop Can Earn the Badge

If you sell on Etsy, you have probably seen the Star Seller badge. It is a small badge on your shop that tells buyers you answer messages quickly, ship on time and earn good reviews. Here is what Etsy says it takes to earn it, as of October 2026.

What Etsy requires

According to Etsy’s Help Center, Star Seller eligibility is reviewed on the 1st of every month, using the three months of data before that date. You become eligible 90 days after your first sale. To qualify, your shop needs:

  • At least 5 orders and $300 in sales over the past 3 months.
  • A reply to 95% of first messages in a thread within 24 hours. Auto-replies count.
  • 95% of orders shipped on time, with valid tracking or a shipping label bought on Etsy when required.
  • An average review rating of 4.8 or higher.
  • Meeting Etsy’s customer service standards and following all Etsy policies.

Etsy’s requirements can change, so check the Help Center page for the current rules.

What the badge does and does not do

Etsy says the badge does not directly affect search ranking. What it does is help buyers spot shops with a record of good service. Shops without it are not penalized, though all sellers are still expected to meet Etsy’s service standards.

How a small garage shop can work toward it

  • Answer fast. Turn on notifications and set aside two short times a day to reply to messages. Even a quick “thanks, I’ll get back to you today” counts.
  • Set honest processing times. If a product takes five days to make, say so rather than promising two.
  • Buy shipping labels through Etsy when you can, so tracking is recorded automatically.
  • Photograph and describe items accurately so buyers get what they expect, which helps your ratings. See Product Photos That Sell.
  • Ask for reviews in a way that follows the rules. Our guide to honest customer reviews explains how.
  • Watch your numbers in Shop Manager under the Customer service stats tab. Etsy says the current period updates daily.

A few things can cost you the badge, including an overdue bill, policy violations or trying to inflate your stats. Play it straight.

Don’t build your whole shop around a badge. Good communication, on-time shipping and products as described are worth doing anyway, and the badge is a bonus. Results vary, and no badge guarantees sales.
