Selling on Amazon Handmade: Fees, Rules and How to Apply
Amazon Handmade is a section of Amazon reserved for approved makers. For a garage business it can put handmade products in front of shoppers who already buy on Amazon. It works differently from Etsy, though, starting with an application and a different fee setup.
What counts as handmade
Amazon’s Handmade page lists five kinds of qualifying products: hand-altered (a premade item you change, like a decorated mug), hand-designed (an original design such as an art print), handcrafted from raw materials (like a carved bowl), repurposed and upcycled items. Sellers must also follow the program’s guidelines.
Products have to fit Amazon’s Handmade categories, which include home, kitchen and dining, jewelry, pet supplies, toys and games, artwork, clothing and accessories, and sporting goods, among others. Items outside those categories can’t be listed in the Handmade store.
Fees as of October 2026
- Professional selling plan: required for Handmade, normally $39.99 a month. Amazon says that after a one-time first-month payment, the monthly fee is waived for approved Handmade sellers.
- Referral fee: 15% of the sale or $0.30 per unit, whichever is greater.
- Shop page: free to create; you pay referral fees only when you sell.
Fees and terms change, so check Amazon’s current pages before you apply. If you’re still being charged the monthly fee after approval, Amazon says to contact Handmade support.
How to get started
- Register for a Professional seller account, or upgrade an Individual account.
- Apply to Handmade and agree to the program guidelines.
- Once approved, list products and mark them with the Handmade classification.
- Build your maker profile with your story, process and photos.
You can check your application status in Seller Central.
Fulfillment options
You can ship orders yourself or use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Amazon’s own fulfillment service, which has its own fees. Amazon notes that customized products must be fulfilled by the seller, so personalized items have to ship from your shop.
Is it a good fit?
Amazon Handmade can suit makers with repeatable products, steady production and good photos. Make sure you can keep up with orders before you list many items. Run the numbers with the referral fee included, and compare with your other channels.
Selling on any marketplace still means following your state and local rules for business licenses and sales tax, which vary by location.
