How to Start a Paintless Dent Repair Business From Home

Paintless dent repair (PDR) means massaging a dent out from behind the panel, or pulling it from the front, so the factory paint stays untouched. It’s a skill-heavy trade you can run from a truck or a home garage.

What PDR can and can’t fix

The Ding King says PDR suits shallow dents up to a few inches across, as long as the paint is intact. Cracked or chipped paint, deep creases, aluminum panels and dents with no access behind them usually need a body shop instead. CARSTAR adds that very sharp dents or overstretched paint rule PDR out.

Training and practice

Courses vary widely in price. As of October 2026, Dent College in Knoxville lists a two-week, 80-hour program at $6,495 for 2026 classes (rising to $8,495 in 2027), with a tool kit included. Dent Aid in North Carolina lists a two-day intro at $1,500 and a 10-day basic course at $10,500.

Class time is only the start. In a BodyShop Business article, one technician learned by putting dents into spare hoods and panels in a garage, and a shop tech suggested six to eight months of practice before charging customers.

Tools to budget for

  • Rods: Dentcraft lists a 16-piece side-panel starter set at $630 and a 10-piece rod set at $1,042.
  • Glue pulling: KECO sells a cold glue kit with a 2.5-pound slide hammer at $419.95.
  • Lighting: Eppy’s lists a Killer Tools PDR light board at $236.25.

Prices are as of October 2026 and change often.

Mobile or home garage?

Many techs work on-site. A PDR tech interviewed by Edmunds described himself as strictly mobile, working out of his pickup. A home garage keeps you out of the weather, but check your local zoning and HOA rules before customers drop off cars.

Insurance and licensing

General liability may not cover customer cars. Simply Business explains that garagekeepers coverage is meant for vehicles in your care, custody or control. Licensing varies by state. California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair, for example, has rules for mobile automotive repair dealers. Check your state and city, and talk to an insurance agent.

Pricing jobs

J.D. Power (June 2024) put most quarter-size dent repairs at $50 to $200, with each additional dent around $40 to $75, and dents six inches or wider at $200 to $350. Use these as a reference, then quote by size, depth and access.

Finding first customers

BodyShop Business describes techs running regular routes to dealerships and used car lots, and big collision chains calling outside PDR specialists during rushes, especially hail season. Hail work often means travel and fierce competition. CARFAX notes that comprehensive insurance usually covers hail, so expect to work with adjusters.

Safety

The Edmunds tech described eye strain from bright lights and strain on wrists and back. Take breaks, use a padded mat, and work in good weather or a sheltered space. Use care removing trim panels and follow your glue gun maker’s instructions.
