Running Sales and Discounts on Etsy Without Giving Away Your Margin

Holiday shoppers hunt for deals, and Etsy gives you built-in tools to offer them. The trick for a garage seller is to discount in a way that still pays for your materials and time. Here is how Etsy’s sales and discount tools work, based on Etsy’s help pages as of October 2026, and how to use them without giving away your margin.

Start with your numbers

Before you set any discount, know your cost per item: materials, packaging, fees and shipping. Etsy charges its usual fees on the discounted price, so a deeper discount shrinks your profit twice. If you haven’t worked out your pricing yet, read our simple pricing formula for handmade products and what Etsy fees cost per sale first.

A quick test: if you take 20% off, what is left after costs? If the answer is close to zero, choose a smaller discount, free shipping or a bundle instead.

The discount tools on Etsy

You’ll find these in Shop Manager under Marketing, then Sales and Discounts. According to Etsy’s help center, the main options are:

  • Promo codes: a percentage off (whole numbers from 5% to 75%), a fixed amount off, or free standard shipping. You can cap total uses or limit each buyer to one use.
  • Sales: a percentage off or free shipping, shop-wide or on selected listings.
  • Order minimum discounts: a discount that starts once the cart reaches a set total, which can lift your average order.
  • Bundles: up to three of your listings sold together at a discount.
  • Targeted offers: codes sent automatically to shoppers who abandoned a cart, favorited an item or made a purchase.

Etsy notes that when sales overlap, only the highest applicable discount is used, and bundle discounts don’t stack with other promotions. Sellers are also responsible for following consumer protection laws and Etsy’s policies.

Bundles for gift sets

If you make candles, cutting boards, planters or game accessories, a three-item bundle is an easy way to raise the sale total without a steep markdown. Shoppers get a gift-ready set, and you ship one box.

Order minimums

A free shipping offer or small discount at a set cart total, such as $50, nudges buyers to add an item. Choose a threshold only slightly above your typical order.

Thank-you offers

Etsy’s targeted thank-you codes go out after a completed purchase, and last a year after sending. That is a low-effort way to earn repeat orders. For more on that, see our article on turning one-time buyers into repeat customers.

Keep a simple record of each promotion: the dates, the discount, the listings and the result. After two or three tries you’ll see which offers bring in profitable orders and which ones only lower your prices.

Etsy’s holiday sales event

Etsy’s help center describes a Cyber Specials event, listed as running November 23 to December 1, with an opt-in deadline of October 27 and a minimum 25% discount to be considered for Etsy’s marketing. Check the current event details in Shop Manager before you commit, because dates and rules can change. Etsy says it looks for strong photography, unique items and a well-written About section when choosing items to feature, and that being featured isn’t guaranteed.

Etsy also says you can’t raise a price and then lower it to look like a sale. The original price needs to have been in place for a substantial period. If you plan a holiday sale, set your regular prices now.

A simple holiday plan

  • Pick one or two of your best-selling items and decide the lowest discount you can afford.
  • Schedule a sale for the weekend you want, rather than discounting the whole shop.
  • Make sure inventory and production time can handle a rush, and update your processing times.
  • Check your shipping cutoffs with your carrier so holiday orders arrive on time.
  • After the sale, look at Etsy’s sales stats to see conversion and revenue before you repeat it.

A smart discount is a way to bring in the right buyers at a profit, not a race to the lowest price. Run one test, learn from the numbers and adjust.
