Free Help for Your Garage Business: SCORE Mentors and Small Business Development Centers

Starting a garage business can feel like a solo project, but you don’t have to figure out every step alone. The U.S. Small Business Administration funds a network of partners that offer free or low-cost advice. Two of the most useful for a new home business are SCORE and Small Business Development Centers.

SCORE: free volunteer mentors

SCORE matches business owners with volunteer mentors. Its FAQ says mentoring is always free, no matter how many times you meet, and that it has more than 7,500 volunteers nationwide.

  • Request a mentor by ZIP code, or browse mentor profiles and pick one.
  • Meet by video, phone, email or in person, depending on the mentor.
  • Work with more than one mentor if you need different kinds of expertise.
  • Join workshops and webinars. Many are free, and any fee is shown before you register.

Small Business Development Centers

America’s SBDC network says there are nearly 1,000 local centers, hosted by universities, colleges, state economic development agencies and private partners. Consulting is no-cost, and training is low-cost. SBDCs work with both new and existing businesses, so you can bring an idea that isn’t launched yet.

Other SBA partners

The SBA also lists Women’s Business Centers, which offer training and counseling for women-owned businesses, and Veterans Business Outreach Centers for veteran- and military spouse–owned businesses. You can find all of these through the SBA’s local assistance tool.

How to get the most out of a session

  • Bring your idea, a rough startup budget and your top three questions.
  • Ask what local permits, licenses or zoning rules people in your area usually run into.
  • Share your pricing and ask for honest feedback.
  • Leave with one or two next steps, and book a follow-up.

It’s worth booking a session early, before you buy major equipment or sign a lease on anything. A mentor who has run a business can often spot a pricing gap or a missing permit while it is still cheap to fix.

A mentor can’t replace a lawyer or accountant for specific legal or tax questions, but they can help you decide what to ask and where to go next.
